While we were in Brussels, we took a day trip to Brussels for no other reason than to try the waffles, mussels and beer. We learned fairly quickly that while those three things are GREAT motivators for going into that city (honestly, I would go back there in nanosecond for those things), we overlooked a few things including:
We spent some time here ducking into chocolate shops (there are so many of them in this city!) and of course, admiring the architecture. While we were here, we also found a little stand selling waffles. Upon requesting a plain waffle, I got this look of disbelief (it also almost looked like they wanted me to leave) from both my husband and brother. “You can’t get a plain waffle!” they both yelled. I relented and told my husband to choose one for us to share. I admit that what he chose (a waffle topped with strawberries and bananas and then drenched in chocolate) was wonderful, but I’m still certain I could have eaten a plain one and been just as happy. (I think.)
We also came to see this famous little statue:
I’m pretty sure I would have been really disappointed if we had come to Brussels and not seen Manneken Pis. Apparently, the rest of the city had the same idea on this particular day. (I’m still not sure what they were celebrating, but I really liked the blue jackets of the band members.)
This was a little out of the way from everything else (we had to take a train to get out there), but I think it’s almost a necessity to try and see this sculpture. Especially if you’re from a city with a giant bean as a main tourist attraction.
Anyway, what did we miss? I’m sure we need to cover more of Belgium next time we’re in that part of the world. In the meantime, I could use a [plain] waffle. Mmmmmmmmmmmm…
